Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR), formerly known as VSS Medical College, is a premier public medical institution located in Burla, Sambalpur, Odisha. Established in 1959, it stands as one of the oldest and most esteemed medical colleges in the state, playing a pivotal role in healthcare education and services in western Odisha.

Key Highlights of VIMSAR:

1. Academic Programs:

  • Undergraduate (MBBS): VIMSAR offers a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) program with an annual intake of 200 students. Admission is through the NEET-UG examination, with 15% of seats allocated under the All India Quota and 85% under the State Quota.

  • Postgraduate (MD/MS): The institute provides postgraduate courses in various specialties, including General Medicine, Pediatrics, Pathology, Microbiology, and Dermatology. Admissions are based on NEET-PG scores. 

  • Paramedical and Nursing Courses: VIMSAR also offers diploma and degree programs in nursing and other paramedical fields.

  • Affiliated with the Odisha University of Health Sciences and recognized by the National Medical Commission (NMC), VIMSAR maintains high academic standards.

5. Infrastructure & Campus:

  • The institute is situated on a sprawling campus in Burla, equipped with modern classrooms, laboratories, libraries, and residential facilities.

  • A significant addition is the newly inaugurated Super Specialty Hospital, a five-story, centrally air-conditioned facility with 275 beds, including 55 ICU beds. This facility houses departments like gastroenterology, endocrinology, clinical hematology, plastic surgery, and pediatric surgery. 

  • Plans are underway to construct a helipad to facilitate helicopter emergency medical services (HEMS), enhancing the institute's emergency response capabilities.

  • Paramedical & Nursing Courses: Admissions are based on entrance examinations and merit, as per the guidelines of the Odisha University of Health Sciences.
